    Dan Ringelstein

    Arup

A Commitment to Cities Cities are the places where the strongest forces for change are at work and where there is the greatest need to address issues of growth, liveability and climate change. The physical environment can be designed, and economic and political forces can be influenced by the design process. As a result, design plays an essential role in the public interest to stimulate, guide and influence debate as well as public and private investment at all urban scales, from street to neighbourhood to city. Dan brings a unique perspective to his many accomplishments in urban environments around the world. As an architect, urban designer and city planner, he is interested in the physical characteristics of a place and how planning, urban design, urban infrastructure, landscape design and architecture can create a positive public environment. This is evident in the strong role he has played in realising complex projects of significant magnitude through collaborative planning, design and delivery across 30+ Years. Prior to joining Arup in 2022, Dan was the leader of the City Design Practice at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) based in London. There, Dan directed projects which focussed on the urban transformation of our cities. He had also guided the urban strategy of many architectural projects delivered by the London office of SOM. Dan has extensive experience working across differing cultures and contexts throughout the world. Collaborating closely within a multi-disciplinary team, he is able to guide the development of city designs with public and private sector clients and specialist experts. His urban design and planning skills include a strong ability to work in concert with regional authorities, city officials, public and private institutions, developers, specialist consultants and individual communities to deliver long-term visions as well as short term ‘wins’. Dan has been a long-standing member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) over the length of his career, joining first as a member in the US, and then in the UK and Europe. Presenter

    Nectar Efkarpidis

    Director, Molonglo

Nectar Efkarpidis is a director of Molonglo and its principal agitator. Molonglo is a property developer established in 1964 with offices and active projects in Athens, Melbourne and Canberra. Molonglo sees property development as the willing of architecture into being; from an abstraction of drawings and ideas into something to be touched, inhabited and lived in. Molonglo does this through property development, design and investment, and research and publishing. Molonglo’s current projects include a mixed-use building in Melbourne that melds varying office typologies with cultural, social and wellbeing activities. Across three distinct neighbourhoods – Koukaki, Kaminia and Kypseli – in Athens, Molonglo is restorating a series of buildings, investing them, through sensitive renovation and repair, with new life. In Canberra, they are slowly creating a 14 hectare neighbourhood named Dairy Road where light industry, working, living, recreation and entertainment will take place in a natural landscape setting. Molonglo’s publishing projects include: Marble in Metamorphosis, a narrative non-fiction and photography book that contemplates the physical and cultural life of marble; Landscape as Protagonist, which imagines landscape as the place to begin a built project, not a way to finish it; and Designing with Difference, a publication that looks beyond building code and universal design to truly accessible built space. Current collaborators include David Chipperfield Architects, Assemble, 6a architects, Dan Pearson Studio, Peter Märkli, Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Royffe Flynn, author, Rachel Cusk and Athens based sculptor, Theodore Psychoyos.
